New Year’s Eve is nearly upon us. 2017 is coming to a close which leads me to reflect on the past year and set my sights on the broad, blank canvas of 2018. Personally, I love change and new beginnings and goals and plans. The traditional litany of New Year’s resolutions can get old and it seems we make resolutions knowing we are only going to break them. The last few years you may have seen the growing trend on social media to choose a word of the year. This one word becomes your daily, monthly and yearly focus. Have you done this before? Are you choosing a Word of the Year for 2018? Selecting just one word can be a bit daunting – I mean, there are so many amazing words in the universe. Here are 4 easy steps to choosing a word of the year for 2018 and to get you painting your canvas with colors that represent the true you.
Step 1: Think about the Character not the Behavior
The first step to choosing a word of the year is to throw out the to do list. With that old list we focus on “going to the gym 3 times a week”, “never eating a carb again”, “getting out of debt”, etc. These are all behaviors and if we flub up then our goal is shot, right? Instead, focus on the character. Who do you want to BE? What is your SPIRIT saying to you? Quick! Brainstorm words you want to be and feel. Here are a few to get your wheels turning . . .
Step 2: Shift the Perspective to Awareness
Now that you have a list of possibilities you will find your perspective shifting a little bit. This is not about becoming a new person overnight. This is about creating awareness throughout multiple aspects of your life. How can this word affect your business? How will it change relationships in your family? Take a look at your list of possible words and narrow it down to just one. Which word will be your priority this year? How are you expecting this focus to affect 2018?
Step 3: One Foot in Front of the Other
You now have a word, NOT a to-do list. You have a word to focus and meditate on daily. The third tip for choosing a word of the year in 2018 is to take it slow. This is not adding things to your daily schedule but instead giving you the freedom to take a step back and say, “Does this choice or activity further develop _________ in my life?” Having a word of the year gives you a built-in mechanism for setting boundaries and giving yourself the freedom to say no. This is a process of baby steps and there will be times when you will make decisions that do not follow your word of the year and that is okay. Take a step back, put it into perspective and move on to the next decision while focusing on your word.
Step 4: Think Broad
As I mentioned above, having a word of the year focuses on the character. This is not a to do list or a behavior chart with good job stickers. This word will impact work, family, friends, personal wellness. Because you are mentally focused and clear on a specific quality rather than a checklist you will most likely discover increased harmony throughout your life. Now that you have your word for 2018 get out there and live it!
