Welcome to this adventure in the Black Hills of South Dakota! As a newbie to Spearfish, I want to enjoy this adventure and chronicle it, both for myself and others. The Black Hills are rich in history, geography, nature and people. I can’t wait to explore and share local treasures with you.
While searching for hiking options this summer I discovered that most directions for hiking trails and local attractions are written for the locals (take the trail after the Kissing Sisters”). There is something to be said for keeping the local treasures for the local people but I’d also enjoy helping others experience the beauty here. I’m hoping my hiking posts will provide adequate directions even if you don’t know which hills (??) are the kissing sisters.
The kids and I love to have adventures. Spearfish is pretty much a homeschooler’s paradise. Nestled in the Northern Hills, Spearfish is just a 45 minute drive to Rapid City which is the “big city” of the region. Sturgis (home of the motorcycle rally) and historic Deadwood are also nearby. There are so many resources, events and activities here. I am amazed that there is always something happening in the area and most activities are family friendly. Whether you enjoy solitude or busy events there is something for everyone.
